How to Prepare for Stenographer Exams

Stenographer recruitment tests two separate skills — taking dictation and producing a clean transcript in a fixed time. Preparation should train both, in that shape.

Know your speed band

Grade D exams commonly dictate at 80 WPM in English and Grade C at 100–120 WPM, with Hindi bands set separately. Confirm the current pattern in your official notification and build the routine around that number.

Train the transcription clock

Practise transcribing inside the time window your exam allows. Candidates who only practise dictation often run out of time typing.

Use mock tests weekly

One full-length mock a week under real conditions — no pausing, no retries — is worth more than several relaxed practice passages.

Review with numbers

Compare this week's accuracy at your target speed with last week's. If it has not moved, change what you practise, not how long you practise.
